Blueberry Syrup for Treating Urinary Tract Infections Naturally

by Elise Wheeler

Urinary tract infections are not comfortable and can cause constant urination with sometimes burning or itching sensations.

Sometimes fevers, nausea and vomiting with abdominal swelling can accompany urinary tract infections.

I know from experience that not only can these symptoms occur with these types of infections, but I got severe lower back pain with chills and headaches as well.

When I had a urinary tract infection, I did not take the antibiotic my doctor prescribed because the side effects on the label were worse than the symptoms of the infection I already had.

Instead, I made and used my great grandma’s home remedy, which was homemade blueberry syrup for urinary tract infections.

Why are Blueberries Useful for Treating Urinary Tract Infections?

Blueberries are useful for treating urinary tract infections because they contain these natural compounds within them that stick to the bladder walls causing them to become slippery.

When the walls of the bladder are slippery, the bacteria cannot stick to them causing inflammation and an infection.

In addition, blueberries contain antioxidants, high amounts of vitamin C and minerals that contain medicinal properties in them that contain antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, pain relieving and fever reducing properties too.

Ingredients Needed for the Blueberry Syrup for Urinary Tract Infections

The ingredients needed for the blueberry syrup for urinary tract infections are three cups of fresh or frozen blueberries, a half cup of elderberries, two cups of organic cranberry juice, one cup of fresh or frozen strawberries, two cups of organic honey and a tablespoon of dried ginger root.

The fresher the ingredients are, the stronger and better the syrup will be for treating the infection naturally and more quickly.

You can find these ingredients at the grocery store and whole food and herbal shops.

Making the Syrup

To make the blueberry syrup, place the berries, juice and herbs into a medium saucepan.

After, place the pan on the stove, turn it on medium heat, and boil the ingredients together until the berries mush and release their juice and the liquid in the pan is reduced in half.

Once the berries have become mushy, and the liquid has reduced in half, remove the pan from the stove and place a metal strainer over a bowl.

Next, strain the berries and ginger root from the liquid, and discard them.

After, you will be left with this warm berry like juice with a deep bluish red purple color.

Then, pour in the honey and mix it together with the juice to form blueberry syrup.

Once you have done this carefully, pour the blueberry syrup into a mason jar or any other clean glass jar you have on hand and store the syrup in the refrigerator for up to two to three weeks to keep it fresh.

Using the Syrup to Treat the Infection

To treat your urinary tract infection, take two tablespoons of the syrup three times daily for about two weeks. Do not stop dosages in between because it will cause the infection to come back.

With proper doses often in a two-week period, the infection should heal and be gone.

If you like, you may take the syrup daily to prevent urinary tract infections if you are one to get them often. I personally take the syrup every day for two weeks when I have an infection and that helps cure it naturally and keeps it away.

I find taking the syrup for a week only is not enough, but it does work very well as a natural remedy when taken for two weeks straight three times per day.

The syrup is very easy to take because it is very sweet like berries and taste like dessert syrup.

However, I always like to make sure I have a meal before taking it because I find food helps the nutrients in the syrup get into my body faster to help treat the infection more effectively.

You do not have to do this though.

Precautions

Those of you who are allergic to any of the ingredients in this blueberry syrup for urinary tract infections should not use it to treat your infections naturally unless prescribed by a doctor to do so.

However, I have not experienced any side effects from this remedy, and it is one I will continue to use because it has worked for my family and me for years. I hope this natural remedy helps treat your urinary tract infection too.
