Tension headaches are usually caused by stressful situations that make us tense. These types of headaches can cause pain, stiffness, dull aches and tightness in the neck, shoulders and head.
Sometimes they can even cause nausea, lack of concentration and sensitivity towards loud sounds and bright lights.
Treating tension headaches doesn’t have to be done using over the counter pain relievers. Instead try relieving tension headaches with natural medicines and treatments that are safe and effective.
Remedies for Relieving Tension Headaches
Stretching Out
One of the best natural and most effective treatments for tension headaches is getting up and moving around. Stretching the neck and shoulders out can help loosen up the muscles in the neck and shoulder areas, which helps relieve the pain and aches in the head.
Try doing some neck, shoulder and arm exercises.
You may also want to try doing yoga for several minutes each day to help prevent tension headaches from even happening because yoga helps relieve stress and keep the muscles in our body loose and free from pains and headaches.
Walking
out in fresh air can also help too.
Hot and Cold Compresses
Another great natural treatment for tension headaches is hot compresses to the
neck and shoulder area.
Heat helps the muscles loosen up and relaxes them so they don’t become tense causing you a tension headache. Heat can also relieve some of the pain caused by a tension headache as well.
If
you don’t find heat soothing for your tension headache you could always try
using cold compresses. Cold compresses can be very soothing and help relieve
inflammation in the neck, shoulders and head also.
Sip on Herbal Teas
One of my personal favorite ways to relieve tension headaches is drinking
soothing and calming herbal teas like chamomile, peppermint, ginger and
spearmint teas.
Sometimes you can even find herbal teas specifically for relieving headaches, stress and tension.
Sipping on herbal tea when you have a tension headache helps relax the mind, body and spirit while also relieving stress.
Herbal teas also help hydrate the body and relieve inflammation.
One
of the biggest reasons many of us get headaches is because we are simply
dehydrated and need more fluids.
Warm Baths & Showers
Another really nice way to help get some relief from tension headaches
naturally is by taking a warm bath or shower.
Sometimes the warmth of the water helps relieve stiffness and tightness as well as aches and pains that come along with a tension headache.
Warm showers and baths can also help relieve stress and refresh your mind, body and spirit so you can get through the rest of your day and relax a little bit easier.
I
know when I get really strong tension headaches, I like to take some lavender
or eucalyptus mint bubble bath and make a relaxing aromatherapy bath to relax
in. I find they work well and it usually only takes 20 to 30 minutes before I
feel completely relieved and happy again.
Lavender Aromatherapy
Another great remedy to relieve mild tension headaches is by burning natural
soy or beeswax lavender candles.
Lavender helps calm the mind and spirit and by doing that it helps relax the body and relieves stress and tension from it. The scent of the lavender also helps relieve headaches and helps get rid of the nausea feeling that sometimes come with those types of headaches.
Other
soy and beeswax scented candles you might want to consider burning to help
relieve a tension headache are ginger, cinnamon, eucalyptus, mint, chamomile
and lemongrass.
Herbal Supplements
Some natural herbal medicines to take to help relieve tension headaches would
be Valerian root, ginger, skullcap, spearmint, rosemary, feverfew, white willow
bark and kava kava.
These herbal medicines come in the form of teas, tinctures, supplements and loose dry leaf form. These herbal remedies help relieve stress, inflammation, tension, muscle stiffness and tightness, headaches, nausea and body aches.
However,
you will want to talk to your doctor before trying any of these herbal
supplements to help relieve your tension headaches. If your doctor gives you
the okay then try one of the natural herbal remedies.
Bottom Line
Well now you know some natural ways to help relieve tension headaches. See, you
don’t need over the counter pain medicines to help relieve them.
