Healing Herb and Chicken Bone Broth

Nourishing and rich in nutrients is bone broth.

It is healing to the body and comforting to the mind. It’s the perfect remedy on days when you need a pick me up or soothing relief from an illness.

My daughter is a big fan of it and with her being a picky eater I try to always have some going at all times in my slow cooker. It helps me feel better knowing she is at least getting something into her belly and body that is full of nutrients necessary for growing a little human up strong.

Thankfully bone broth is super easy to make, but it does require a bit of time to slowly cook.

Here Are The Steps On How I Make Chicken Bone Broth

  1. After I slow cook a whole chicken with its guts and all, I remove as much meat as I can from the bones and toss the bones back into the cooker with all the juices and liquids that came from the whole chicken as it was slowly cooking. I do all this in a slow cooker. Cooking a five to six-pound chicken in a large slow cooker takes about 8 hours.
  2. Again, after removing all the meat from the bones, I toss the bones back into the slow cooker with all the chicken juices, which is basically chicken broth and I add in about a teaspoon each of dried thyme, rosemary, parsley, onion powder and garlic powder. Then I toss in about 2 tablespoon of sea salt, and two additional cups of filtered water along with three whole carrots, a whole sweet onion cut into halves and 3 stalks of celery.
  3. Next, I place the lid onto my slow cooker and allow the bone broth too slowly simmer in the crockpot on low heat for another 8 to 12 hours. These helps make sure that all the nutrients have been extracted from the bones, veggies, and herbs to create a rich bone broth that can be healing to the body and mind.
  4. Once the broth is ready, you can toss in some additional chicken meat if you have some left over from slowly cooking your chicken, or you can eat it up as is. We love the broth best as it is and usually sip on it when we first wake up in the morning for a tasty healing and energizing breakfast, but you can sip on the broth whenever you please. We actually find sipping on it in the morning does wonders to keeping us feeling full and happy. I think that is due to all the fats and nutrients in it.

What Are Some of The Ways The Bone Broth Can Be Used?

  1. In our house, we love taking homemade bone broth we have left over and using it to make a chicken flavored rice dish. All we do is use the broth as our liquid instead of water. Simply do the same.
  2. Another way we love to use the broth is to make chicken and rice soup, or chicken and veggie soup. You can really use it as a base for any soup recipe you desire.
  3. The bone broth also makes a delicious nourishing gravy. Just take a cup or two of it and add in a tablespoon of flour per cup of liquid broth you use. Place these ingredients into a sauce pan and place it onto a burner on medium heat. Constantly whisk the ingredients together until it thickens into a gravy. If you find the gravy comes out too thick go ahead and add in more broth or water. If you want to enhance the flavor of it go ahead and add in some seasoning of your choice. We usually do a bit of salt, pepper and rosemary.

What Are Some End Thoughts To Keep In Mind?

Homemade bone broth doesn’t just nourish and comfort the body. The broth has the ability to strengthen the immune system, bones, tissues and muscles of the body.

This is because it is packed full of healthy fats, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins the body needs to repair and maintain itself.

The best way to drink the broth is on an empty stomach, which is why we drink it first thing in the morning. Sometimes we just sip on the broth throughout the day and skip meals because it’s just that filling and good.

Remember, you can consume the broth whichever way is pleasing to you.
