I would say I’ve been to camera hell + back.. but I’m not back yet.
I L.O.V.E.D. my Canon SD880 IS —but it has been discontinued + is now selling for $1,100 on amazon.com —No thank you.
So–I went for the rave reviewed Panasonic Lumix DMC ZS3. It was kind of good and kind of sucked.
Nice + crisp outdoor photos–yes I was practicing belaying a rope off of the balcony–totally normal, right?
Cute pic of the pups at the park playing disc golf–
Stellar macros salad shot under BRIGHT overhead lighting–
Goat blowing low light skills.
I tried over + over + setting after setting to get it to shed some light on the situation sans flash.
Nope. No way. Wouldn’t have it.
So–deemed as damaged due to non functioning exposure settings it is on its way back to amazon.com as a dysfunctional camera.
Today I went to the camera store. I am pretty sure that anyone can work at a camera store–or they all just lie to you. I bought the Canon SD1200 —because the guy said it was the most similar to the late great SD880. LIAR. It totally sucks (sorry if you have it) and I hate it. It is going back tomorrow.
Then I called Canon–I offended the first guy I talked to when I told him that the 1200 was chincy. Apparently he just bought it for is daughter.
So–I called Canon back–new guy [sigh of relief] answered + was actually seemingly knowledgeable. He recommended the following:
- Canon PowerShot S90
- Canon PowerShot SX200 IS
- Canon PowerShot SD970 IS
Now I have no flipping clue which one to buy. I want a good camera that works well for low light macros situations (sans flash) and good zoom for outdoors–Any suggestions are GREATLY appreciated.
Now I must DRAG myself away from the black hole that is camera hunting + actually study —EEk!!
oXo.
B+B

i have the same harness!
one climbing partner cleaned his parents gutters with his gear so he could climb and repel from the roof,so *i* think you’re totally normal.
ah sorry about the camera woes!!
we have a doggy backpack for toby so when we go frisbee golfing he can be the caddy
he’s very good at retrieving over shot discs!
I hope you get your camera dilema worked out soon. I miss you!!!!
I have a Casio and it’s been working out pretty well. And BONUS,I recently discovered there was a food setting which makes a WORLD of differnece on my food pics.
Good luck darlin!
I would get the 970. I’m pretty sure it’s the upgraded version of ours. The square one just looks sketchy and the 90 looks expensive.
Not sure if you want to spend this much, but I recently bought a Canon Powershot SX20 IS for the school where I work, and it is fabulous! It retails at $399.99 but I got it for $349.99 at Best Buy.
Glad to see you back on here!!! Miss you girlie…hope you get the perfect camera SOON!!! xo
Awww, sorry to hear about the camera issues. It’s always so hard to find one to fit your needs. I have a Cannon SD550 and really like it,so hopefully this time you get what works for you!
Ooh,I love playing Disc Golf!
We like to take our dogs with us too,and we have trained my Border Collie to chase my disc, find it,and lay down next to it,marking where it lays. He wants to pick up the disc so bad that he will nudge it a little, and just start pulling up the grass out of frustration. It is really fun though, because it gives him a “job”to do,which Border Collies totally need.
Sorry to hear about your camera woes.
Sorry about your camera issues. I hate when stuff like that happens. Your doggies are so cute!
This may be a weird comment but…i think i have the SD880 at home (burried somewhere in my technology drawer). Have since upgraded to a Nikon DSLR (D90 –Ah-mAzing but mucho $$). If I do have my old one kicking around,I’d be happy to gift it to you? Free to a good home,in return for good Karma.
Email me (you should have it since the comments ask me for it?) and if I’m not totally insane,it’s yours.
Hope this helps,
Sally
I thought the SD 1200 did suck. Not the same.
But now I have the SX 200IS,which I like quite a lot…you can check out my blog if you want to see the pictures. I usually use the “auto”setting, though. It is not a DSLR,but the closest one to it as a “point-and-shoot”camera…
Good luck!
Get the SD960 –that’s the one I bought after playing with your 880 and loving it. I was told it was the updated version of the 880,adding in HD video capability. Of course,I bought that in August, which is ages ago in camera time,so the 970 might be the next one in the line? If you can find a 960,check it out
hi,
you can find a lot of tests, threads and reviews at DPREVIEW. Most of them covers the low light capabilities of the new S90.
No other among Canon compact cameras work like that. Actually it is very probably unique among all the compacts regardless of the manufacturer.
hopefully you can sort out all the camera stuff.. i’m not to into the cam world. i just get one.. which seems good.. and use it! and i love ur dogs!
I hope you’ve found a nice camera and you’re out of camera hell by now =)
